Description

A water art work for remembrance of Henry Stryhn and the 1000 year anniversary of Roskilde in 1998. The square itself is fully paved and probably an heat island. The art project is suitable as water playground when it is hot outside, altough acess might be prohibited.

Background of art project The Roskilde jars Year of creation: 1999 Year set up: 1999 Material: Stoneware The artist: Peter Brandes (born 1944)

The Roskilde Jars are three very large jars, each a good 5 meters high and barely 8 tonnes heavy, which since June 1999 have been Roskilde's landmark when you come to the city by train.

The jars stand on Hestetorvet between the station building and the town's "street". The three jars, which are probably one of the artist Peter Brandes' most monumental works, are a gift from the company Stryhns A/S to the city on the occasion of Roskilde's 1000th anniversary in 1998.

The three jars are similar in shape, but have different ornamentation. Inside the jars are the names of all Stryhn's employees as well as those who participated in the production.

The first jar, seen from the station, is decorated with a poem by Henrik Nordbrandt, which is about Roskilde and Queen Margrethe I.

The jars almost "float" on water in a basalt and granite basin, and they are illuminated in the evening by "fiber lights" from the water basin.
