Stormwater planters, bump outs and soak aways

Raingarden

Created at: 30 Aug 2022

Description

Stormwater planters, trenches, bump-outs, and soakaways are essentially all Bioretention systems that collect rainwater runoff and filter it through layers of plants and soil. This filtered water is infiltrated back into the soil for groundwater while the overflow is sent into a drainage system. Stormwater planters can provide native, hydrophilic flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees while also providing habitats for wildlife which in turn, help strengthen the neighbourhood ecologically and culturally.

Stormwater planters and bump-outs were introduced on the Auckland CBD waterfront just recently and were built with the intention of supporting the planter boxes already on-site. They really helped with creating greenspaces along the waterfront as well as creating a lot more permeable spaces along the streetscape.
