Tiritiri Matangi Island Restoration

Biodiversity

Floating Green (floatlands, islands)

Created at: 30 Aug 2022

Description

Tiritiri Matangi Island is a Hauraki Gulf reserve. Ecological restoration on the island began in 1984, with revegetation, species translocations, and invasive species management. On the island, human caused degradation has a long history. The restoration work was initiated and completed by a volunteer organisation called Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi. The restoration efforts have improved the island's ecosystem's integrity. Prior to the arrival of humans, the island was known to have a seabird-dominated ecosystem with coastal forest of pohutukawa and kohekohe. Tiritiri Matangi is now recognised as a top conservation advocacy site. It is regarded as a model of community conservation participation and has sparked a slew of other initiatives in New Zealand and around the world.

More habitat for the various bird species on the island was created by planting more trees. This means greater biodiversity and a healthier environment for wildlife.

Tiritiri Matangi has nearly 300,000 native trees and is home to rare birds such as takah, stitchbirds, and kakako. More trees meant that more habitat for the island's various bird species was created. This means greater biodiversity and a healthier environment for wildlife. It has also created a recreational space by restoring the island's forests and natural habitat. Hiking trails and walks are available for people to enjoy. The majority of visitors to the island come to see the restoration. The visitors' main message has been how inspiring it is, as well as the importance of Tiri and conservation in general.
