Created at: 22 Feb 2024

Description

The Benban Solar Park, located in Benban, Aswan Governorate, Egypt, is one of the world's largest photovoltaic power stations, with a total capacity of 1,650 MW. Completed in November 2019, the park covers an area of 37.2 square kilometers and consists of 41 separate plots allocated to different companies for development.

The park is part of Egypt's Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, aiming to generate 20% of electricity form renewable sources by 2035. The solar park is supported by the Nubian Suns Feed-in Tariff program, which incentivizes private sector investment in renewable energy projects. Financing for the park has involved a consortium of international organizations, including the International Finance Corporation, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the Green Climate Fund, among others.
